In fields from archaeology to zoology, an understanding of genomics is increasingly becoming a crucial skill. DNA sequencing and other genomic research techniques are used in scientific fields beyond medicine and genetics as tools to aid researchers in asking and answering new types of questions.

And Ward Wheeler, an invertebrate zoology researcher at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, says he's been using DNA sequencing for many years as an additional source of information on the creatures he studies. "There's a several-hundred-year history of doing anatomy and microscopy, and genomic and genetic sequencing techniques add a comparative molecular component," says Wheeler, whose lab is focused on the evolutionary history of invertebrate groups.
